CILC to Host Events with Former Chilean President, U.N. High Commissioner
UC Davis Law’s California International Law Center will present two marquee virtual events featuring esteemed international experts as part of its “Global Voices on Democracy and Human Rights” series.
On Thursday, March 31, Dr. Ricardo Lagos, former president of the Republic of Chile, will address current threats to democracy -- from authoritarian proponents in the United States and across the globe -- in his presentation “Epochal Change: Challenges to Democracy.”
Dr. Lagos will share his perspectives and knowledge gained from having lived through the decline of Chile’s democracy, led the opposition to the country’s military dictatorship and finally served as president (2000-2006) during the restoration of its democracy. Register here.
On Tuesday, April 5, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet will discuss migration and human rights. High Commissioner Bachelet will address how we, as a global community, can and should protect the rights of those forced to migrate due to adverse circumstances beyond their control. Register here.
Dean Kevin R. Johnson, Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and professor of Chicana/o Studies at UC Davis, and the nation’s most cited immigration law scholar, will provide questions and commentary at both events.
Associate Dean for International Programs and CILC Director Beth Greenwood will host the events, and Dr. Jorge Rojas, visiting fellow, CILC, and visiting professor, Universidad de Chile, will co-host.
CILC, with the Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies, also hosted UC Davis Law’s March 7 “Crisis in Ukraine” event. The panel discussion featured UC Davis Vice Provost Joanna Regulska, UC Davis Law Professor Raquel Aldana and retired U.S. Naval War College Professor James Armstead.
In January, CILC presented a virtual conference on intellectual property in the COVID-19 era. Panelists included UC Davis Law Professor Peter Lee.
CILC fosters the work of UC Davis School of Law’s faculty, students, and alumni in international, comparative, and transnational law to enhance California’s role as a global actor.
