The King Hall Negotiations Team (KHNT) is a law student organization comprised of law students interested in negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and client counseling. KHNT members organize educational opportunities that help students become attorneys who deliver creative problem-solving to their clients as well as zealous advocacy.
Each year, a subset of KHNT members represent the law school at ABA-sponsored competitions in Negotiations and Client Counseling, where they routinely advance to the Regional Finals and to subsequent National Competitions. Students involved in KHNT also participate in a number of more specialized external competitions that focus on particular areas of law, such as entertainment law, bankruptcy, and sports law.
First-year law students are encouraged to compete in KHNT’s internal Annual 1L Negotiation Competition which takes place every Fall Semester. This competition provides first-year JD and LLM students with the opportunity to explore and develop their negotiation skills outside the classroom.
Each Spring semester, KHNT also hosts the annual Intraschool Negotiation Competition for interested JD and LLM students, Performance in this competition is used as a factor to determine eligibility to join KHNT the following academic year. The Intraschool Competition doubles as an excellent educational experience in that students are evaluated, and receive detailed feedback from, practicing lawyers, judges, and law professors who specialize in skills training.
Many students complement their interest in negotiations, mediation, arbitration, and client counseling by taking experiential courses that the law school offers on these subjects and working closely with faculty who support the team to advance their skills.
