International Business Transactions

This one-week course, designed for international legal professionals (attorneys, in-house counsels, compliance and legal professionals, students aspiring to practice international business law, etc.) will offer a comprehensive overview of the law of International Business Transactions from a practitioner’s perspective.

Program Topics*

  • The sources of Transnational Commercial Law
  • The principles of Lex Mercatoria and the UNIDROIT Principles
  • The impacts of Lex Mercatoria and UNIDROIT for international transactions
  • Examine various methods of International and Transnational Dispute Resolution

  • Highlight the interplay between litigation in national courts and the complexities of international arbitration
  • Address the two key aspects of contemporary business transactions, and their impact on companies and businesses in a globalized world: Corporate Social Responsibility, and ethical challenges faced by international businesses and practitioners

Instructor

Jaime Ubilla (PhD) is a Visiting Professor and Lecturer in Law at UC Davis School of Law and an attorney with extensive experience in international transactions and projects. He holds a PhD, from the School of Law, University of Edinburgh (U.K.), an M.A. in Law from Waseda University (Tokyo, Japan), and a J.D. from Universidad de Chile. He has vast experience in transnational law, having been involved in transnational transactions in 4 continents, with special focus in the Asia-Pacific Region. He has advised for many years new clean technology projects as well as various sustainable projects that connect Asia and Latin America, and has also provided services for many years to various international businesses, companies and institutions. He has been a Professor of Law at the Universidad Católica del Norte, Chile, and he currently teaches Transnational Business Law at UC Davis.

Tuition: $1,900 USD

Non-refundable Application Fee: $150 USD (Note: If you apply for multiple summer programs, the application fee is only due once.)


Certificates and Credits

All participants will receive a certificate of completion if they attend class regularly.


Deadline to Apply

We strongly recommend enrolling by June 15 or earlier to ensure adequate time for the local U.S. embassy in your country to process the necessary visa for entering the U.S. We have been informed by past participants that U.S. embassies in some countries can take from four to six weeks to process non-immigrant visas (students, business or tourist).
